about us committee join events devex 2018 seminars 2017 seminar funding archie contact sponsoring gallery minutes welcome to the aberdeen formation evaluation society a chapter of the society of petrophysicists and well log analysts. best spwla chapter 2015-2016 photos from the april monthly meeting 16th annual quiz night welcome to the aberdeen formation evaluation society () i am delighted to be taking over at the helm of as president of the society, a role that i do not take lightly, and offer my wholehearted thanks to richard arnold, past-president, for his dedication to both the role and the committee. has a rich history having been formed in 1980 and affiliated to the society of petrophysicists and well log analysts [current name used] in 1982. since then, a whole host of renown personalities from within the local petrophysics and logging community have contributed, volunteered on the committee to help run the society, presented or supported the evening lectures, seminars and social events. is actively involved in the promotion for the public benefit, education and knowledge in the scientific and technical aspects of formation evaluation. key activities of the society include: monthly technical meetings, where guest speakers present on various petrophysical topics annual technical seminar bursaries to msc students and partial phd funding ( is a registered charity in scotland (sc039526)) christmas quiz night (since 2001 we have managed to raise over £30000 ($45000) which has been donated to the archie foundation – who provide facilities and support for the aberdeen royal children’s hospital) earlier this year received the spwla 2015-2016 best chapter award, which reflects the dedication of the committee and members over the years, to whom i give thanks. for 2017 it is the turn of to take the chair for the successful devex conference. devex 2016 saw considerable changes to previous years with 350 free registration places being made available through support from industry, who recognise the value of this conference. the devex 2017 organising committee, which is being chaired by past president richard arnold, is looking to build on the success of the 2016 event. already six operators and the oga have agreed to be partners again and further opportunities to support the conference will be available. please visit the devex website for further details. there are clear challenges for in the year ahead. as of november, the brent oil price is approximately $45 and opportunities for sponsorship over the last few years have reduced considerably. in addition, requests for student bursaries for phd and msc courses have increased, a probable reflection of the pressure on local employment. although ’ accounts are strong, the positive balance has been reducing year on year recently. this is clearly not sustainable. a more immediate challenge is the new chapter agreement being rolled out by spwla. michel claverie, european regional director of spwla, presented a summary of the agreement at the november technical meeting. has not signed up to the agreement and is currently working with other european societies to evaluate the possible constitutional impact before advising the membership and calling a ballot or extraordinary general meeting. i would like to finish up by thanking all members for their continued support for and ask that you continue to encourage colleagues and friends to attend the monthly lectures and seminars. if you have any suggestions, please feel free to contact me. thank you and best wishes for the year ahead. ed downer president aberdeen formation evaluation society student funding offers bursaries to msc students and partial phd funding, click here to find out more. sponsoring sponsoring will allow us to keep doing the work we do, click here to see how you can help. events find out about upcoming or previous events in here. contact if you want to get in touch with about anything from suggestions for the website to giving a talk then feel free to drop us an e-mail. recent events university of aberdeen – msc integrated petroleum geology conference day, 14 august 2018 events msc integrated petroleum geology conference day 14 august 2018;
